Even though mental illnesses are common and cause great suffering in every part of the world, many health workers have a limited understanding about mental health and are less comfortable dealing with mental illness. This book is a practical manual for mental health care for the community health worker, the primary care nurse, the social worker and the primary care doctor, particularly in developing countries. After giving the reader a basic understanding of mental illness, the book goes on to describe more than 30 clinical problems associated with mental illness and uses a problem-solving approach to guide the reader through their assessment and management. Mental health issues as they arise in specific health care contexts are described, for example in a refugee camp, a school health programme or with people suffering from AIDS, as well as in mental health promotion. The final section combines quick reference information for common problems and it also includes chapters for the reader to personalise the manual for a particular location, for example, by entering local information on voluntary agencies, the names and costs of medicines and words in the local language for emotional symptoms. Also available: Handbook for Psychiatric Trainees - ISBN 1904671349Family Work for Schizophrenia, 2nd Edition: A Practical Guide - ISBN 1901242773 RCPsych Publications is the publishing arm of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (based in London, United Kingdom), which has been promoting excellence in mental health care since 1841. This book is a detailed practical guide to intervention. The approach to working with families has been used by hundreds of community staff and has proved helpful with a range of clients in addition to those with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The techniques and strategies included in the guide are clearly described for use by clinical practitioners and are illustrated by case examples. The second edition retains the original sections, including the engaging the family, treading the fine line between working as a therapist and being a guest in the family's home, improving communication, teaching problem-solving and cultural issues. Material has been added on the evidence base for family work for schizophrenia and on the emotional responses of siblings. The guide has been further enriched with the authors' experience of working with families over the ten years since the first edition was published. The recent transformation of postgraduate medical education has changed the landscape of psychiatric training. This handbook is a must for anyone trying to navigate the terrain. It covers a wide range of topics, from ethical reasoning in psychiatry to more practical aspects of coping at a personal level. It informs trainees about liaison with key players in their training and provides an overview of virtually every aspect of the trainee's professional life. The book will be invaluable for psychiatric trainees and trainers. Those who are interested in choosing psychiatry as a career will find it a useful introduction to the subject and to what psychiatrists do. This essential guide to postgraduate training in psychiatry is written and edited by opinion leaders in medical education and by doctors who have recently completed training. It takes a practical and accessible approach, focusing on personal development and well-being, as well as educational achievement.

Modeling his text on 1977's Where There is No Doctor, Patel (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UK) offers a manual that simplifies psychiatric language and practice for general health care workers in the developing world. He offers diagnostic and treatment advice, presenting chapters on medically unexplained systems, problems arising from loss and violence, problems in childhood and adolescence, and integration of mental health care into other settings.
