"This book is about the representations - both visual and linguistic - which people give of their own places of origin. It examines the drawings of interviewees who were asked to draw their own place of origin on a white A3 sheet, using pencil or colour, according to their choice. If they were born in a place they did not remember because they moved in when they were very small, they could draw the place they did remember as the scenario of their early childhood. The drawings are examined from three different perspectives: semiotics, cognitive psychology and geography. The semiotic instruments are used to describe how each person reconstructs a complex image of his/her childhood place, and how they translate their own memories from one language to another, e.g. from drawing to verbal story, trying to approach what they want to express in the best possible way. The cognitive-psychological point of view helps clarify the emotional world of the interviewees and their motivations during the process of reconstruction and expression of their childhood experiences. The geographical conceptualizations concern a cultural level and provide insight into the cartographic models that inspire the maps people drew. One of the main findings was the influence from cultural codes as demonstrated in the fact that most of the US students interviewed drew their maps showing considerable cartographic expertise in comparison to their European counterparts."--Page 4 de la couverture Acknowledgements 6 Contents 8 Introduction 12 1 Genesis of a Research Project 13 2 Corpus and Main Issues 15 3 Methodology 18 4 The Meaning of This Study 22 References 26 Part I: Maps, Place of Origin, Identity: Underlying Cultural Models 27 Intermedial Editing in the Representations of Places of Origin 28 1 Introduction 29 2 Montage 30 3 Between Imagination and Enunciation 31 4 Bricolage 35 5 Corpus 36 5.1 The Landscape, the Postcard, the Bird’s-Eye View 36 5.2 Figurative Logic and Verbal Language 38 5.3 Color and Emotions 42 5.4 Photography: Material Medium-Supports, Devices, Formal Medium-Supports 45 5.5 Reinterpretation of Genre: The Sitcom and Establishing Shot 49 5.6 Zoom Vision and Graphic Competences 51 5.7 Visual Exploration Paths 52 6 Conclusions 55 References 56 The Representation of the Places of Origin: A Geographical Perspective 58 1 Introduction 58 2 Maps of Places of Origin 60 3 Point of View in the Representation of Place 62 4 Drawing and Relational Space 67 5 Islands and Places 72 6 The Construction of Space 77 7 Conclusion: The Thirdspace of Places of Origin 81 References 84 Navigating Maps of Memories 87 1 From Maps to Memory Visions 88 2 Navigable Maps Today 91 3 The Case of a Map and Drawing of the Memory of Origin 94 References 100 Part II: A Case-Study 102 Self-Mapping and Construction of the Identity: The Case Study of Two Twin Girls Between Past, Present and Future 103 1 Introduction 103 2 The Place of Origin and Its Visual Representation 104 2.1 Description of Map 1 and Comparison with Google Maps 106 2.2 Description of Map 2 and Comparison with Google Maps 110 3 Maps of the Place of Origin as Discourse 115 4 Discourses on the Maps 117 5 Place of Origin and Construction of Subjectivity 122 6 Conclusion 125 References 127 Part III: Dataset Analysis 129 Geographical Imagination and Memory: Maps, Places, Itineraries 130 1 Introduction: “For a Successful Excavation a Plan, Truth Is Needed” 131 2 Frame: “My Map” 134 3 Geographical Pathways 138 4 Writing Geographical Memory: Exploration and Itinerary 141 References 148 Maps of Places of Origin or Maps of Self: A Graphic and Conversational Analysis 150 1 Introduction 150 2 Representations, Places and Origins 151 2.1 Cognitive Psychology and Mental Representation 151 2.2 Environment Psychology and Places 153 2.3 Clinic Psychology and the Origin of Personal Meaning 155 2.4 Maps of Places of Origin: An Integrated Definition 158 3 Methodological Issues 159 3.1 Maps of Places of Origin as Graphic Artefacts 159 3.2 Maps of Places of Origin as Narratives 161 4 Analysis of Results 163 4.1 Reactions to the Request to Draw Maps of One’s Place of Origin 163 4.2 Formal and Graphic Analysis of Maps 164 4.3 Talking About Maps 171 4.4 Comparing Two Cases 175 4.4.1 M.’s Case 176 4.4.2 E.’s Case 178 5 Conclusions, Applications and Future Perspectives 180 References 182 Into the Map: The Re-enactment of Experience in Sign Languages’ Representation of Places of Origin 184 1 Between Experience and Representation 184 2 The Linguistic Use of Space in Sign Language 189 2.1 Perspectives 192 3 Past and Present 193 4 Being There 195 5 Final Considerations 199 References 201 The Role of Perception in the Representation of Places of Origin: Some Remarks on Movement 204 1 Representing and Sensing Place of Origin.
