VE-Day - is a day that has remained in the memories of all those who experienced it, marking as it did the end to nearly 6 years of war - a war that had cost the lives of millions of people all over Europe; had destroyed homes, families, and cities; and had brought huge suffering and deprivations to populations all across the European Continent. Millions of people across the globe rejoiced at the news that Germany had finally surrendered unconditionally, relieved that the intense strain of total war was now finally over in Europe and that Nazi Germany was now no more. In towns and cities all across the world, people marked the victory with street parties, dancing and singing. But these celebrations were also tempered with the knowledge that this was not the end of the War, nor was it an end to the impact of the European war on its diverse populations - throughout 1945 people still continued to die as a direct result of actions taken during the war or in tragic accidents. For decades afterwards the political, social and economic repercussions of the Second World War were being felt still long after those tumultuous events of mid to late 1945. This Photographic History by Author Andrew Rawson was originally released to mark the sixtieth anniversary of VE-Day, and it covers the last months of the War in North West Europe and Italy upto each of the individual surrender ceremonies later held that marked the formal end of the War. The first of these ceremonies took place at Lüneburg Heath, near Hamburg, on 4 May 1945 when British and Commonwealth representatives accepted the Surrender of all German Forces in The Netherlands, North-West Germany and Scandinavia. This was followed by American representatives accepting the Surrender of all remaining German Forces on 7 May, and on 8 May, Russian representatives accepted the Surrender of all German forces in Eastern Europe (including Berlin).
