The book is an essay on the development of basic ideas and concepts of modern ecology. Primary sources are used, rarely cited in Russian under one book cover. The early stages fundamental concepts of ecology are discussed in details. It is shown the contribution in the development of ecology Russian and foreign scientists. All chapters contain little-known episodes of life and work of prominent ecologists. It is shown that the foundation of ecology is the understanding of the cosmic role of green plants that convert the kinetic energy of sunlight into the potential energy of living matter.
