The witness insisted the woman at the window had screamed before the hit-and-run car made its fatal collision with the old man. That didn't make any sense to Mitch Taylor, detective third grade, but he went up to the third floor anyway. Jub Freeman of the Police Laboratory came along, just out of curiosity. There was a corpse up there, all right, but only the corpse of a cat; that didn't seem to Mitch and Jub reason enough for a girl as lovely as Andrea to look so thoroughly frightened. . . . That was how it all started and that is how the odd partnership was formed. Mitch was a cop who believed you solved a case by plugging away at the most likely suspect; Jub believed what his microscopes, spectrographs, and test-tubes told him.
