The ETO is seen by many as the major theater of World War II (1939-1945), with more infantry regiments serving there than any other. This title follows one soldier ("Joseph") as he is drafted in February 1941, trains with the 22d Infantry in the United States and then ships to England in January 1944. On D-Day he lands on Utah Beach and in the following months fights through France, Belgium, and into Germany. The problems the common soldier faced between June 1944 and May 1945 are dealt with in particular in this authoritative and moving book. The GIs who struggled ashore through the surf of Omaha and Utah Beaches on 6 June 1944 were members of the best-equipped army ever assembled up to that date. It was in the NW Europe campaign of June 1944-May 1945 that the US Army was finally able to show its full potential for fluent mechanised warfare. This title describes both combat and service uniforms worn in the ETO, from the assault troops on the D-Day beaches to bemedalled veterans celebrating VE-Day; other subjects covered include artillery, tanks, anti-tank weapons, the engineers, the replacement system; and the insignia of the divisions committed to this front. Men-at-Arms 342, 347 and 350 are also available as a single volume special edition as 'The US Army in World War II'.--Provided by pulisher This title follows one American soldier ("Joe") through his induction, assignment and training in the 22nd Infantry Regiment in 1941. It takes him from draftee stage, through the tactical operations at squad, platoon and company level, and into the reality of combat in Northern Europe in 1944-45. Examines the typical experiences of a single soldier fighting in each geographic region, taking on challenges such as unfamiliar terrain, climates, and unpredictable local conditions often while under the threat from enemies This is the third book examining the US infantryman in World War II.
