Un Paradoxe Français

Spécialiste de l'antisémitisme, Simon Epstein a constitué au fil des ans un socle informatif considérable sur les itinéraires contrastés de deux catégories de Français : ceux qui protestèrent contre le racisme et l'antisémitisme dans les années 1920 et 1930, avant de s'engager dans la Collaboration ; et ceux qui exprimèrent une hostilité ou un préjugé à l'égard des Juifs, puis qui se retrouvèrent, l'heure venue, dans la Résistance. Ce livre ne retrace ni l'histoire de l'antiracisme ni celle de l'antisémitisme ; il est l'histoire du passage de l'un à l'autre. Les principaux chefs de la Collaboration ont traversé, chacun à sa manière, une phase de dénonciation de la haine antijuive ; beaucoup furent même militants de la Ligue internationale contre l'antisémitisme (LICA). Réciproquement, de nombreux résistants, et non des moindres, sont originaires d'une extrême droite nationaliste qui, dans les années 1930, fut fertile en prises de positions hostiles aux Juifs. C'est ce phénomène paradoxal que Simon Epstein décrit puis analyse, en s'appliquant aussi à démonter l'occultation dont ces chassés-croisés, déroutants certes mais significatifs, ont fait l'objet dans les mémoires françaises. Analyzes the phenomenon, which Epstein considers to have been massive, concerning two categories of French persons: those who were engaged in the struggle against racism and antisemitism in the interwar period (many of them active in LICA) and who, during the Vichy regime, became antisemites; and those who were antisemites before World War II who joined the Résistance during the war. Traces the history of individuals passing from one group to the other. In every category there were tens of people occupying important positions of leadership in both groups, which raises the question of what was "good" and "bad" in the 1930s-40s. Examines the figures of ex-anti-racist politicians in Vichy, as well as journalists, universitiy professors, and writers. States that neo-antisemites adhered to the Vichy regime and not "old" antisemites, because the former's pacifism (and not fascism) was a principal cause of their collaboration. Relates, separately, the political path of François Mitterrand (pp. 543-577), from the extreme right and Vichy to the Résistance and to socialism after the war. Surveys, also, postwar discussions in the press and in books in France about these "conversions".
