These selected papers, presented originally to the Fourth World Congress for Soviet and East European Studies, debate historical and contemporary issues relating to Ukraine. The relationship between intellectual and social developments in nineteenth-century Russia, and their impact on Ukrainian national identity, is explored in depth. Ukrainian migration to Siberia, and the demographic consequences of the tragedies of the 1930s and 1940s in Soviet Ukraine, are examined anew. The establishment of Soviet power in Ukraine in 1917-18, Ukrainian nationalism during the Second World War, and Ukraine on the eve of the August 1991 proclamation of independence, are also discussed. As an independent Ukraine enters the international community, this book provides an unrivalled guide to the forces that have shaped its recent development.
