DosAGE CoNTRAINDICATIONs AND PRECAUTIONS 2 muscular use in vials containing 100 or 250 mg tetracycline HCl and for intravenous use in vials containing 250 or 500 mg tetracycline HCI. Oral. Adults: 250-500 mg every 6 hours. Children over 8 years: 25-50 mg/kg body weight daily in four divided doses. Intravenous. Adults: 250-500 mg twice daily at 12 hour intervals. Children over 8 years: 10-20 mg/kg body weight daily in divided doses every 8-12 hours. Intramuscular. Adults: 250 mg once daily or 300 mg daily in divided doses at 8-12 hour-intervals. Children (8 years or older): 15-25 mg/ kg daily up to 250 mg per single daily injection. Dosage may be divided and given at 8-12 hour-intervals. (This route may be painful; injection should be deep into a large muscle mass; oral therapy is preferred.) When treating syphilis, a total of 30-40 gin equally divided doses over a period of 10-15 days should be given orally. Gonorrhea patients sensitive to penicillin may be treated with tetracycline administered as an oral dose of 1-5 g followed by 0.5 g every 6 hours for 4 days to a total of 9 g. Therapy should continue for 24-48 hours after signs am~ symptoms disappear. Streptococcal infections that are responsive should be treated for at least 10 days. Known hypersensitivity to any tetracycline is a contraindication. Caution must be exercised in-.patients with renal or hepatic problems. The use of tetracyclines during the last half of pregnancy (tooth development phase) may lead to permanent discoloration of the teeth of the offspring.
