"Humor may surface in numerous and diverse contexts, which at the same time determine how humor works, its form, and its functions and consequences for interlocutors. Adopting a sociolinguistic and discourse analytic perspective, this study is aligned with approaches to humor exploring the variety of humorous genres, the wide range of sociopragmatic functions of humor, and the more or less dissimilar perceptions speakers may have concerning what humor is, what it means, and how it works. The chapters of this book propose a new theoretical approach to the analysis of humor by bringing context into focus. Furthermore, the study explores how we can teach about humor within a critical literacy framework creating classroom space for everyday humorous texts that are part of students' social realities, and simultaneously taking into account that humor may yield multiple, disparaging, and often conflicting interpretations. This book is intended to appeal to humor researchers from various disciplines (such as linguistics, media studies, cultural studies, literary studies, sociology, anthropology, folklore) as well as to professionals or researchers in education."--Publisher's description Front Matter....Pages i-x Front Matter....Pages 1-1 Philosophical Interpretations of Quantum Physics....Pages 3-74 The Problem of Causality in an Indeterministic Science....Pages 75-112 Relativity and the Atom....Pages 113-151 Laws of Nature and Time’s Arrow....Pages 152-202 The Symmetry of Time And The Branch Hypothesis....Pages 203-208 Front Matter....Pages 209-209 The Measurement of Time....Pages 211-224 The Ontological Status of Time....Pages 225-234 The Reality of Time....Pages 235-242 The Causal Nature of Time....Pages 243-249 The Symmetry of Time....Pages 250-254 The Psychology of Time....Pages 255-258 Conclusion....Pages 259-261 Back Matter....Pages 262-294 After relatively short academic appointments at the University of Toronto and at Princeton University, he taught at the University of Chicago until reaching the age of normal retirement. v. 1.
