Therapeutic hypothermia has emerged as a very important treatment option for patients with cardiac arrest as it provides significant protection from developing neurologic injury once the patient has been successfully resuscitated. Studies have demonstrated over 15% absolute risk reduction in death and neurologic injury using this therapy. Although hospitals and medical centers have become familiar with this important intervention it still remains greatly under utilized due to an experience and lack of resources to safely and effectively deploy such a program. The objective of this book is to educate and familiarize both providers and institutions as to how to develop and deploy and provide therapeutic hypothermia to their patients. The current knowledge for this is provided by speakers and national experts and also by literature review. There are several courses being provided on this as well throughout the US. These are good venues for people to come and see and get hands on experience, but there still needs to be a concrete book with references on how to go about getting this program started. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has emerged as an important treatment option for patients resuscitated from cardiac arrest as it provides significant protection from developing neurologic injury. Although hospitals and medical centres have become familiar with this intervention, it still remains greatly under-utilized due to a lack of experience and resources to deploy such a program safely and effectively. Therapeutic Hypothermia After Cardiac Arrest provides an evidence-based approach to identifying and managing cardiac arrest patients who are appropriate for TH. The Editor has assembled a team of prominent experts in the field to provide a practical "how-to" book that presents the reader with the necessary tools to design, apply and successfully manage a TH program at their institution. As such, this book will address the needs of emergency medicine physicians and staff, intensivists, internists, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, interventionalists and nursing staff Front Matter....Pages i-xvi Introduction....Pages 1-14 Pre-hospital Therapeutic Hypothermia....Pages 15-24 Molecular Mechanism of Reperfusion Injury....Pages 25-41 Cardiac Arrest: Who Should Be Cooled?....Pages 43-50 Hypothermia: How to Cool....Pages 51-60 How to Implement Therapeutic Hypothermia in the Hospital....Pages 61-68 Post-Cardiac Arrest: How to Develop and Implement a Standard Therapeutic Hypothermia Protocol?....Pages 69-77 Complications of Therapeutic Hypothermia Following Cardiac Arrest....Pages 79-85 Pharmacology and Therapeutic Hypothermia....Pages 87-99 Determination of Neurological Prognosis....Pages 101-106 Therapeutic Hypothermia as a Treatment of Myocardial Infarction and Cardiogenic Shock....Pages 107-117 Back Matter....Pages 119-122
