SUMMARY: By the mid-21st Century, technology had become much too complicated for humans to handle -- and the computer network that had grown up to keep civilization from tripping over its own shoelaces was also beginning to be overwhelmed. Something Had To Be Done.As a solution, Raymond Dyer's project developed the first genuinely self-aware artificial intelligence -- code name: Spartacus. But could Spartacus be trusted to obey its makers? And if it went rogue, could it be shut down? As an acid test, Spartacus was put in charge of a space station and programmed with a survival instinct. Dyer and his team had the job of seeing how far the computer would go to defend itself when they tried to pull the plug. Dyer didn't expect any serious problems to arise in the experiment.Unfortunately, he had built more initiative into Spartacus than he realized....And a superintelligent computer with a high dose of initiative makes a dangerous guinea pig. But the computer was only logical -- it lacked common sense. And its all-too-logical decisions were beginning to cause too many near fatal accidents. The solution was on the drawing boards -- a universal self-aware and self-programming computer, equipped with judgment. But... could it be controlled? Or would it attempt to take over, disregarding its creators? If so, could it be turned off? Raymond Dyer and his team of computer specialists knew they had to find answers to these questions, but the project was to dangerous to test on Earth. So they installed the super computer on an orbiting satellite and programmed it to survive at all costs. Then they sent a group of men to attack the computer... to goad it into trying to kill them. They they would turn it off. Obviously if things went wrong, they might lose a few men -- but the satellite and the computer could always be destroyed. Obviously... But the computer didn't quite see it that way!
Midway through the 21st century, an integrated global computer network manages much of the world's affairs. A proposed major software upgrade - an artificial intelligence - will give the system an unprecedented degree of independent decision-making, but serious questions are raised in regard to how much control can safely be given to a non-human intelligence. In order to more fully assess the system, a new space-station habitat - a world in miniature - is developed for deployment of the fully operational system, named Spartacus. This mini-world can then be "attacked" in a series of escalating tests to assess the system's responses and capabilities. If Spartacus gets out of hand, the system can be shut down and the station destroyed... unless Spartacus decides to take matters into its own hands and take the fight to Earth.
