The author’s original footnotes are retained and augmented with updates and corrections by the translator. Gunther was a student of Franz Boas at Barnard College and joined the Anthropology Department at the University of Washington in the 1920s. Based on original observations of Aurel Krause and his brother, both geographers who spent six months among the Tlingit in the winter and spring of 1881-82, this classic study is the earliest and most comprehensive account of an important Northwest Coast culture before it was significantly changed by European contact.
