The student's transition from school to university is not easy. The hazards range from the social and financial, through the administrative, to the intellectual and emotional. They originate in home, in school, in university. They are not uncomiected with the vagaries of examiners, the lure of the cricket field, and the waywardness of sweethearts. Central is the problem of student selection, yet improved selection is no panacea. And though we strive towards a solution, this human problem is, in the scientific sense, insolvable. It is a problem that has always been with us, and will—in some degree—remain with us; it has been brought to public attention by the sudden increase in student numbers and scholarship awards, and by the changes in university entrance requirements occasioned by the introduction of the General Certificate of Education. First published in 1998. This is Volume XV of twenty-eight in the Sociology of Education series. This is a study with special reference to university entrance written in 1949 which started as an enquiry into the performance of a group of university scholarship holders in their First-Year examinations. It developed into an examination of the transition from school to university and is concerned primarily with the problems of London and the provincial universities, though there is much that is relevant to the problems of universities elsewhere. The investigation originated in the concern which was felt amongst the staffs of universities about the general standard of student attainment. Drawing on the great wealth of knowledge and experience of educational practitioners and theorists, the volumes in The Sociology of Education set of the International Library of Sociology explore the very important relationship between education and society. These books became standard texts for actual and intending teachers. Drawing upon comparative material from Israel, France and Germany, titles in this set also discuss the key questions of girls' and special needs education, and the psychology of education The International Library of Sociology (ILS) is the most important series of books on sociology ever published. Founded in the 1940s by Karl Mannheim, the series became the forum for pioneering research and theory, marked by comparative approaches and analysis of new disciplines, such as the sociology of youth and culture. Spanning volumes by Parsons, Dickinson and Ossowski, the history of the ILS is the history of modern sociology. Young people are educable. Young people are worth educating. Upon their wise handling depend the issues of ultimate harmonyor conflict in the home, in workshop or factory, and among thenations. Many current methods of treatment find, however, theirjustification only in the somewhat mythical descriptions of pastcenturies. For most of these there is little support in the morecareful studies of recent years Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork Including classic work by David Hargreaves, these books became the standard texts for actual and intending teachers, discussing key questions of girls' and special needs education and the psychology of education which are relevant today. First Published In 1998. Routledge Is An Imprint Of Taylor & Francis, An Informa Company.
