"The Social Ecology of Border Landscapes" is a collection of essays from a wide range of disciplines that address Social Ecologies in border landscapes. As an approach, Social Ecology is useful because it links the human and natural worlds and reveals how changes in social relations, our relation to nature and ecology, and our definition and relationship with boarders are necessary to transcend ecological and social problems. Borders and borderlands are defined broadly to include territorial interfaces, marginal spaces (physical, sociological and psychological) and human consciousness. From theoretical and conceptual presentations on Social Ecology and its agencies and representations, to case studies and concrete projects and initiatives, the book uncovers a thread of contemporary thought and action on this important emerging field. The authors are worldwide scholars and practitioners from the fields of political, ecological and environmental sciences, social sciences, geography, and urban and landscape planning. The book defines the territories of Social Ecology, investigating how social agencies can activate ecological processes and systems, and understanding how the interactions of people and ecosystems can create new sustainable landscapes across tangible and intangible territorial rifts."-- Provided by publisher Cover Front Matter Half-title Series information Title page Copyright information Contents List of Illustrations Preface Contributors Introduction: Social Ecologies and Borderlands Border Landscapes: Charting New Territories Fluidity of Borders, Society and the Environment Border Ecologies and Edge Effects An Integrative Conceptual Framework Structure of this Volume Notes Bibliography Chapters (1-13) Part I Frames: mapping social ecologies in border territories Chapter One On The Agency Of Borderlands Introduction: Borderlands, Limits and Liminalities Borders Beyond our Territorialist and Geopolitical Traditions Borders, Ecology and Peace Parks Borders, Ecology and Globalization Borders, Power and Politics Borders, State Increase and Vacillation Conclusion: Borders, Here, There, Everywhere?
