The archetypically villainous People's Republic of Haven is seeking to divert attention from domestic difficulties by the means indicated in the title. Honor Harrington, commanding a crack ship, plays a steadily increasing and finally decisive role in bringing the Havenite plots to a sticky end. One hopes the third (after "On Basilisk Station" [1993] and "The Honor of the Queen" [1993]) is not the last of Weber's tales of Honor Harrington, captain in the navy of the Manticoran Star Kingdom. These yarns rather make one think of "Star Wars" as it might have been written by C. S. Forester, creator of Horatio Hornblower. They do not pretend to be more than fast-paced entertainment, and Weber's creative ingenuity has guaranteed that they are that very nicely.

Novel 3 of the Harrington Series. Follows "The Honor of the Queen". After almost a year to recover from the injuries suffered in the previous book, Honor is returned to command of a brand new battlecruiser. She now has to face an overwhelming force as open warfare with Haven breaks out. This novel is followed by "Field of Dishonor". Banking on a short, victorious war to replenish their depleted treasury, the ruling class of the People's Republic of Haven do not count on coming up against Captain Honor Harrington and the Royal Manticoran Navy Dame Honor Harrington dropped her long, rolled bundle and removed a hat someone on Old Earth of two millennia past would have called a fedora.
