Die zentrale These der Untersuchung zur Frühgeschichte der Literatursoziologie und Literaturgeschichtsschreibung lautet, daß die Entstehung literatursoziologischer Fragestellungen divergierende und konkurrierende literarische Positionen und mithin die Genese eines literarischen Feldes voraussetzt. Im Anschluß an die genaue Rekonstruktion der Theorie des literarischen Feldes von Pierre Bourdieu wird im Vergleich der französischen und deutschen Verhältnisse in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. und beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts gezeigt, daß die frühe Literatursoziologie maßgeblich durch die Kultursoziologie Georg Simmels mitbestimmt worden ist und der heute beinahe vergessene Literat Samuel Lublinski eine wichtige Verbindung zwischen Literaturkritik, Literaturwissenschaft und Literatursoziologie hergestellt hat. Besondere Beachtung erfahren dabei die Entwicklungstendenzen zu einem ästhetische und soziale Momente umfassenden Formbegriff. In genauen Einzeluntersuchungen wird dies insbesondere am Beispiel der Verbindung von Georg Simmel und Georg Lukács belegt, über dessen Stilbegriff - verstanden als "historische Kategorie" und als "synthetische Methode" - die Komplementarität zwischen Bourdieu und Lukács herausgearbeitet wird.
