The Real and Imagined Role of Culture in Development : Case Studies from Indonesia

While the majority of Indonesia's citizens today are ensured religious freedom, the situation is less clear for members of Indonesia's ethnic minorities who hold to traditional ways. This paper examines Indonesian religious policy from the perspective of pagan members of the Wana population of Poso district in Central Sulawesi. By insisting on conversion to a world religion as a prerequisite for development and full participation as citizens, it is argued, the nation is hampered in dealing effectively with its traditionally minded ethnic minorities.
