"This book should be in every physician's library, since it is essential for clinicians to be knowledgable about this contemporary plague that will affect all of us either directly or indirectly... Both a basic primer and a superb reference for all psychiatrists and mental health professionals." -- Psychosomatics Doody Review Services Reviewer: John Claro Onate, BS, MD(Rush University Medical Center) Description: This book provides healthcare professionals treating HIV patients with an overview of psychiatric disorders, diagnosis and treatment in the comprehensive care of HIV. Purpose: The purpose of the book is to present HIV infection as a "psychiatric epidemic" and describe the relationship between psychiatric disorders and HIV/AIDS. This is a very important concept in my opinion as an HIV provider. HIV has settled in to the under-served and poor inner-city population which has very high incidences of psychiatric and substance abuse disorders. Audience: The author does not list a specific target audience but alludes to psychiatrists. In my opinion this book is suited to psychiatrists, primary care doctors, HIV specialists, PA's and NP's (who work with HIV patients). Additionally this book is an important text for those in combined internal medicine and psychiatry residency programs. The authors are extremely respected in this field. Features: Using case examples from their HIV clinic, the authors discuss the major psychiatric disorders in detail with specific attention to HIV issues with each disorder such as drug interaction and specific issues in psychotherapy. There are excellent chapters on dementia and substance abuse as well. Finally there are much-needed chapters on the growing epidemic of Hepatitis C in this population and the integrated care of HIV. The book is surprisingly comprehensive despite its short length. Assessment: This is a wonderful addition to not only the HIV treatment and management literature but also to psychiatry and primary care as a model of dealing with co-morbid chronic mental and medical illness. Drs. Treisman and Angelino have a refreshing and forward- looking view of psychiatry and the importance of its contribution to the overall care of patients. This is a great read for those with an interest in integrated care, consultation psychiatry and inner-city community psychiatry.

HIV/AIDS has become a psychiatric epidemic. The disease causes or exacerbates such psychiatric disorders as depression, dementia, schizophrenia, and bipolar disease. At the same time, the presence of a psychiatric disorder can lead to increased risk for HIV infection and worsen the prognosis of patients once they are infected.

Dr. Glenn J. Treisman, who has been described as the "father of AIDS psychiatry," describes the relationship between psychiatric disorders and HIV/AIDS and demonstrates the ways in which effective recognition and treatment of mental disorders can increase a patient's ability to obtain better treatment, improve compliance with medical regimens, and reduce incidents of high-risk behavior.

The book provides HIV/AIDS professionals with overviews of psychiatric disorders, including mood and personality disorders, mental retardation, substance abuse and addiction, and sexual disorders and dysfunction. It also provides mental health professionals with essential information on how to care for patients with HIV and those at risk for the infection. The book discusses psychopharmacology, psychotherapy and counseling, as well as adherence and compliance issues, and the relationship between psychiatric disorders and other STDs. Containing the most up-to-date information on diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, this book draws on the authors' unrivaled experience and uses case studies to show HIV/AIDS professionals how psychiatric interventions benefit the patient, the medical team, and society as a whole. The cases are rich and engaging, and convey to the reader the intense disorder that can affect the lives of patients.
