Rhoad of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars were instrumental in securing my Fulbright Fellowship to Swaziland. Mr J. Brooks Spector, as Public Affairs Officer to the US Information Service, helped me to get settled and launch my research in Swaziland. While there, I interviewed many individuals including employers, governmental officials and trade unionists and secured the permission of employers to conduct a survey of their employees. I welcomed the co-operation, input and encouragement. I also had a collegial department at the University of Swaziland at Kwaluseni enjoying the support of Ms Mamane Nxumalo and Messrs John Kabagambe, Appollo Rwomire and Raynauld Russon, Professor C. K. Brown of the Social Science Research Unit and Dr Antoni Szubarga of the Department of Statistics and Demography. Four graduating seniors did an able job of assisting me in conducting the above-mentioned country-wide survey including Ms Phindile Nkambule "The Political Economy of the Southern African Periphery places Swazi women in the context of the world system at the global, regional and local levels. From a socio-historical perspective, the book analyzes industrialization from Europe to South Africa to Swaziland." "In southern Africa, there was a heavy emphasis on mining requiring the migration of male labour from areas of the southern African periphery to the Witwatersrand area of South Africa. In contemporary South Africa, industrialization has resulted in capital mobility for textile and clothing industries within the confines of the region. Industries relocate to the southern African periphery with high concentrations of female labour necessitating that women migrate from remote rural areas and create new family arrangements because male and female migratory patterns do not coincide." "Unlike other areas of the southern African periphery, Swaziland has had both domestic and foreign migratory labour systems. The former includes both males and females and the latter is almost exclusively male. The book explores female wage labour in relation to options for employment and the maintenance of viable nuclear and extended family networks."--BOOK JACKET Front Matter....Pages i-xiv Introduction....Pages 1-13 Front Matter....Pages 15-15 Secondary Industrialisation in South Africa....Pages 17-51 Front Matter....Pages 53-53 Industrialisation in Swaziland....Pages 55-81 Agricultural Production in Swaziland....Pages 82-101 Textile Management....Pages 102-133 Female Workers in Cottage Industries and Factories....Pages 134-164 Front Matter....Pages 165-165 A Lesotho Comparison: Elusive Industrialisation and Labour Migration....Pages 167-193 A SADCC Comparison: Regionalism and Industrial Development....Pages 194-217 Conclusion: Cottage Industries, Factories and Female Wage Labour....Pages 218-223 Back Matter....Pages 224-296 Places Swazi women workers in the context of the world system at the global, regional and local levels.
