This rigorous study addresses the question of why Scottish workers appear to have a more radical industrial social climate than the British mainland. Analyzing a wealth of social statistics from Scotland, Wales, and militant regions of Britain, it is concluded that while Scottish workers are no different than their counterparts in the rest of Britain, the added importance of "the national question" in Scotland indicates that an increased sense of national identity is the primary reason why the country appears to have a more radical point of view." In this volume, the author asserts that a fusion of traditional trade union militancy and national identity creates a more radical outlook within Scotland. He investigates the more militant regions of England and compares Scotland to the Welsh experience, and concludes that these other areas share very similar experiences. He concludes that whilst Scottish workers are no different to their counterparts in the rest of Britain the added importance of the 'national question' provides the answer to the question as to why Scotland appears to have a more radical industrial climate. "Gregor Gall asserts in this volume that a fusion of union militancy and national identity creates the impression of a more radical outlook within Scottish trade unionism than elsewhere in Britain. He also investigates the more militant regions of England and compares Scotland to the Welsh experience: these other areas share very similar experiences but they lack the missing ingredient - a national identity enriched by a social democratic tradition."--BOOK JACKET Gregor Gall.
