Half a century ago our knowledge of mycoses, especially pulmonary mycoses, was rather fragmentary. It was limited to rare case reports as oddities. Accordingly, in the "Handbuch der speziellen pathologischen Anatomie und Histologie" the chapter on lung diseases caused by budding and spore-forming fungi by J. WATJEN (Halle) took up as little as 27 pages. Only ARNDT (G6ttingen) could report on several cases from which he made his observations on actinomycotic changes of the lungs and pleura. Since then our knowledge of mycoses has deepened and expanded in an unpre dictable manner. This progress was mainly due to research and publications in the USA and South America. In Central Europe the number of cases of mycoses has increased during the last two decades, being reported especially as a second disease in patients with spontaneous or iatrogenic destruction of the bone marrow after treatment of cancer with cytostatic agents. The number of known types of pathogenic fungi has increased. The knowledge of their types and conditions of growth have given rise to a subspecialty. Therefore, a great need has arisen for a new edition of the chapter on mycoses in the Henke Lubarsch-Roessle Handbook of Special Pathological Anatomy and Histology Front Matter....Pages N2-XVII The Scope and General Pathology of Human Infection with Fungi, Actinomycetes, and Algae....Pages 1-11 Mycology of the Agents Producing Deep Mycoses....Pages 12-37 Ultrastructure of Human Pathogenic Fungi and Their Mycoses....Pages 38-66 Histoplasmosis....Pages 67-130 African Histoplasmosis (Part 1)....Pages 131-138 African Histoplasmosis (Part 2)....Pages 139-146 Coccidioidomycosis....Pages 147-210 Dermal Pathology of Superficial Fungus Infections....Pages 211-382 Cryptococcosis....Pages 383-464 North American Blastomycosis....Pages 465-506 Paracoccidioidomycosis....Pages 507-576 Lôbo’s Disease (Keloidal Blastomycosis)....Pages 577-588 Mycetoma....Pages 589-613 Sporotrichosis....Pages 614-675 Rhinosporidiosis....Pages 676-683 Subcutaneous Phycomycosis and Rhino-Entomophthoromycosis....Pages 684-690 Chromoblastomycosis Chromomycosis....Pages 691-700 Cladosporiosis of the Central Nervous Tissue....Pages 701-718 Subcutaneous Abscesses due to Brown Fungi....Pages 719-730 Candidosis....Pages 731-761 Aspergillosis....Pages 762-831 Mucormycosis....Pages 832-918 Geotrichosis....Pages 919-952 Miscellaneous Uncommon Diseases Attributed to Fungi and Actinomycetes....Pages 953-1018 Actinomycosis....Pages 1019-1058 Nocardiosis....Pages 1059-1080 Protothecosis — Algal Infection....Pages 1081-1093 Back Matter....Pages 1094-1191
