James Mussell provides an accessible account of the digitization of nineteenth-century newspapers and periodicals. As studying this material is essential to understand the period, he argues that we have no choice but to engage with the new digital resources that have transformed how we access the print archive. Newspapers and periodicals have long been recognized as indispensable resources for those interested in all aspects of the nineteenth century, but they remain neglected due to difficulties working with the large and complicated print archive. In The Nineteenth-Century Press in the Digital Age, Mussell provides an accessible account of how this archive has been transformed through digitization. Now that it is relatively accessible, he argues that we cannot afford to continue to ignore this material. However, we must be able to understand both the complicated forms of newspapers and periodicals and how they have been transformed by various digital resources. In this book, Mussell situates both the print and the digital within a broader media history and argues that the way to understand a culture is through its media, whether this is in the nineteenth century, or today Front Matter....Pages i-xviii Introduction: From Front Page to Home Page....Pages 1-27 From the Margins and for the Margins: Studying the Nineteenth-Century Press Today....Pages 28-68 Bibliographic Codes and Visual Modes: The Role of the Visual on Page and Screen....Pages 69-113 Editions and Archives....Pages 114-148 Newspapers and Periodicals in Class....Pages 149-191 Conclusion: We Have Always Been Users....Pages 192-202 Back Matter....Pages 203-232
