This volume analyzes the narrative structure of the Theogony to support the argument that this poem is a didactic poem explaining the position of man in the divine universe. It discusses how Hesiod employs narratological devices to achieve his purposes. This volume offers analysis of the narratological structure of the Theogony with the purpose of elucidating a major, unifying theme in this poem: the relationship between the divine and mortal realms. The techniques of narratology are herein employed to support the argument that Hesiod portrays the cosmos as sharply divided between gods and men. The Theogony should therefore be read as a didactic poem explaining primarily the position of man vis-à-vis the gods. The first half of this book discusses relevant scholarship and introduces the theme of relationship of gods to men in the Theogony . The second half of the book discusses how Hesiod employs Character-Text, Attributive Discourse, Embedded Focalization, Anachrony, and Commentary to achieve his didactic purposes THE NARRATIVE VOICE IN THE THEOGONY OF HESIOD......Page 3 CONTENTS......Page 7 Acknowledgements......Page 9 Introduction......Page 11 Chapter One The ‘Autobiographical’ Reading of Hesiod......Page 17 Chapter Two The Implied Author of the Theogony......Page 50 Chapter Three The Muses and the Mortal Narrator......Page 76 Chapter Four Character-Text, Attributive Discourse, And Embedded Focalization......Page 114 Chapter Five Anachrony in the Theogony......Page 142 Chapter Six Commentary......Page 178 Conclusion......Page 205 Bibliography......Page 209 Index Nominum ac Rerum......Page 219 Index Locorum......Page 223 SUPPLEMENTS TO MNEMOSYNE......Page 0 THE NARRATIVE VOICE IN THE THEOGONY OF HESIOD 3 CONTENTS 7 Acknowledgements 9 Introduction 11 Chapter One The ‘Autobiographical’ Reading of Hesiod 17 Chapter Two The Implied Author of the Theogony 50 Chapter Three The Muses and the Mortal Narrator 76 Chapter Four Character-Text, Attributive Discourse, And Embedded Focalization 114 Chapter Five Anachrony in the Theogony 142 Chapter Six Commentary 178 Conclusion 205 Bibliography 209 Index Nominum ac Rerum 219 Index Locorum 223 SUPPLEMENTS TO MNEMOSYNE -1
