Purpose:The authors' stated purpose is to document the philosophies and practices of the department of surgical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center. The book is intended as a practical handbook and is organized by disease site.
Audience:This handbook is directed at surgeons in training (residents or fellows) who need up-to-date and concise information to help direct day-to-day cancer care. Each chapter has a brief introduction and pertinent literature review (5-10 pages) followed by useful guidelines based upon current NCCN and MD Anderson recommendations. This edition has added new chapters and updated information in the existing chapters. Authors are all current or former MD Anderson surgical oncology graduates.
Features:Each chapter covers a specific cancer arising from a specific organ system such as breast, colon, or liver. The chapters provide basic introductory information, pertinent literature review, current AJCC TNM staging, and treatment algorithms. Diagrams and treatment guidelines are specific and direct. Controversial topics are mentioned briefly. The MD Anderson preferred treatment is emphasized. The handbook is not an exhaustive review of the literature and readers should use it as an adjunct, not definitive, text.
