The Man in the Iron Mask is the tale of the Three Musketeers, who risk their lives to depose a bad king and replace him with his good identical twin. Dracula is the gothic horror story of an ageless vampire leaving his Transylvanian home and wreaking havoc upon London. The originals are dynamic novels, with adventures, sword fights, blood drinking, ghosts, intrigues, and mysteries, but here they have been made dull, dry, and unappealing. There are footnotes scattered throughout, explaining vocabulary words. In the back of each book, there is a good deal of end matter with author biographies, bibliographies, maps, and time lines. The art is undistinguished, almost simple, and covered in soft washes of color. A lot of text appears under the pictures, resembling captions. These are not true graphic novels as the images do nothing to advance the stories. The audience for these books is questionable. One wonders whether it is an attempt to make classics accessible to children, however, these adaptations are not appealing enough to attract anyone. If the original stories are too dense for students, try the Great Illustrated Classics versions of these novels, whose abridgements make sense and do not slow down the pace of the stories.
