Library Journal

This collection of 13 recent essays explores the New Testament admonition to love one's enemy and practice nonretaliation. The approach is scholarly and demands close, attentive reading; knowledge of Greek is helpful but not essential. The first essay surveys the current status of research on these subjects. The remaining 12 are evenly divided between studies of Jesus' sayings on love and nonretaliation and the epistles' treatment of these issues. All the essays insist on careful, contextual analysis of the scriptures they exegete, but few make a conscientious effort to directly apply their conclusions to modern problems. Recommended for collections serving professional theologians and motivated lay readers.-- Kenneth M. Locke, Lay Minister, Radford, Va.
