Description:This is a summary of the broad field of genitourinary problems facing primary care physicians, house officers and practicing urologists. The monograph includes a discussion of evaluative steps and treatment options for each disease process.
Purpose:The authors set out to produce a monograph that highlights the major genitourinary problems seen in clinical practice. They correctly state in the preface that the work cannot replace the main textbooks of urology. Rather, they sought to publish a work that outlines the disease processes commonly encountered in clinical urology and to provide references for further review. I think the objectives are very worthy and are well met by the monograph.
Audience:The book is clearly written for primary care physicians and urology/non-urology house officers. The manuscript provides enough detail so that a primary care physician with limited urology knowledge can institute a proper initial evaluation of a patient. It also provides succinct reviews of a myriad of disease processes so that a house officer can tailor a more detailed literature review of a specific urology subject. The authors, both urology attendings at Dartmouth, are highly credible authorities.
Features:The book provides brief encapsulated discussions of the many disease processes that are managed by the clinical urologist. Both adult and pediatric urology is covered. The discussions include presentations in outline format of epidemiologic data, presenting signs and symptoms, evaluative steps, and treatment options. There is a good use of tables and data drawn from the current literature. The outline format provides quick and succinct reference material. The main shortcoming is the rather abbreviated discussion of treatment options (risks/benefits/outcomes). This is a minor fault of this book as I perceive the aim to be the education of primary care physicians and house officers.
Assessment:This is a high quality monograph that achieves its goal of providing a brief overview of the scope of clinical urology. It is best used by primary care physicians and house officers (non-urology) who wish to learn more about the proper evaluation and management of common urologic problems.
