Conté: "This book describes the life, times and science of the Soviet physicist Lev Vasilevich Shubnikov (1901-1937). From 1926 to 1930 Shubnikov worked in Leiden where he was the co-discoverer of the Shubnikov-De Haas effect. After his return to the Soviet Union he founded in Kharkov in Ukraine the first low-temperature laboratory in the Soviet Union, which in a very short time became the foremost physics institute in the country and among other things led to the discovery of type-II superconductivity. In August 1937 Shubnikov, together with many of his colleagues, was arrested and shot early in November 1937. This gripping story gives deep insights into the pioneering work of Soviet physicists before the Second World War, as well as providing much previously unpublished information about their brutal treatment at the hands of the Stalinist regime" -- OCLC Preface 8 Acknowledgements 10 Contents 11 Abbreviations 14 1 Introduction 16 References 22 2 Shubnikov’s Early Years in St. Petersburg/Petrograd/Leningrad 23 Sailing trip to Finland 28 References 36 3 Shubnikov’s Scientific Work in Leningrad; Papers with Obreimov 37 References 46 4 Shubnikov in Leiden 47 The Leiden Physics Laboratory Through the Eyes of the Russian Visitors 55 The Shubnikovs in Leiden 58 References 67 5 Shubnikov’s Scientific Work in Leiden: Shubnikov—De Haas Effect 68 References 83 6 Founding of the Ukrainian Physico-Technical Institute in Kharkov 85 References 101 7 History of UFTI in the Thirties 103 References 125 8 Shubnikov’s Scientific Work at UFTI 126 Meissner Effect 131 Type-II Superconductivity 134 Antiferromagnetism 141 Proton Magnetic Moment 143 Nuclear Physics 145 Phase Transitions 145 Applied Work 146 References 147 9 Repression at the Leningrad Physico-Technical Institute 150 Arrests in Leningrad after Kirov’s Murder 152 The 1937 Onslaught at LFTI 154 References 160 10 The UFTI Affair: The Case of Weissberg and Weisselberg 161 Introduction 161 The Case of Weissberg and Weisselberg 162 Testimonies by (Former) UFTI Staff 176 References 180 11 The UFTI Affair: The Case of Shubnikov, Rozenkevich and Gorsky 181 The Shubnikov File 182 The Rozenkevich File 195 The Gorsky File 198 Conclusion 200 References 202 12 The UFTI Affair: Other Repressed UFTI Physicists 203 References 229 13 The Landau-Korets-Rumer Case 230 References 242 14 Shubnikov’s Rehabilitation 243 References 254 15 Afterword 255 The Nature of the Repression that Devastated the Physics Community in the Thirties 256 How Many Physicists Were Suppressed? 260 A Final Note on Sources 261 References 262 Appendix 1 263 Appendix 2 Interrogations of Members of the UFTI Staff (Ref.
