The four volumes of this inclusive edition of Thackeray’s correspondence and private papers—two ready now and two to follow in the autumn of 1946—fill a great gap in our knowledge of the author of Vanity Fair and Henry Esmond. Scattered in a thousand places, some of them confidential, Thackeray’s personal papers concealed a wealth of information about a striking personality and about his time. Now, ordered and made available, they lead to a new appraisal of Thackeray and of his place in the first half of the nineteenth century both in Western Europe and in the United States.
