The Language of Virgil: An Introduction to the Poetry of the Aeneid (English and Latin Edition)

The present volume evolved through annual revisions of my course in Virgil's Latin. Its purpose remains as limited and specific as it was in the beginning. It is a systematic introduction only to such Latin as can be found in the first 207 lines of Aeneid I. The vocabulary and syntax covered are not intended to represent Latin generally. The effort of a student using this book should therefore be justified not necessarily as a foundation for future Latin study but as an end in itself: a taste of unedited Latin, a sample of a great poem, and an appreciation of what this language can do. -- Preface.
