Caravaggism—the influence of the work of Michaelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio on scores of other artists—began in Rome during the first decade of the seventeenth century and spread over Europe as many painters deliberately adopted his style or some features of it. Alfred Moir is the first to treat this important subject in a systematic and comprehensive fashion; he brings together material from many sources, much of it rare, which is of particular interest to art historians and specialists. Besides a large number of illustrations, there are a bibliography, a register of places, a register of Italian and other artists, and an index of groups and institutions.
