-- A Choice Outstanding Academic Book of 1986 -- "This excellent guide to Chinese literature before 1911 opens a world previously accessible only to trained specialists. The result of seven years' work by nearly 200 scholars around the world with funding from a number of sources, it is a stunning example of what careful coordination of effort and painstaking editorial supervision can achieve." -- Choice "Incorporating the most recent scholarship, this original work will have immense value in academic and large public libraries." -- Library Journal "Truly the quintessential and indispensable addition for academic and public libraries." -- Critic's Choice, Global Library Marketing Services The second volume of The Indiana Companion to Traditional Chinese Literature is both a supplement and an update to the original volume. Volume II includes over 60 new entries on famous writers, works, and genres of traditional Chinese literature, followed by an extensive bibliographic update (1985-1997) of editions, translations, and studies (primarily in English, Chinese, Japanese, French, and German) for the 500+ entries of Volume I. These new entries are generally longer than those in the first volume and some contain translations of original poems to illustrate the style of the author or work in question. Volume II augments the basic background, analysis, and bibliography on the literature of China prior to 1911 which was provided by Volume I. The two-volume set gives scholars and beginning students alike a standard handbook for the study of traditional Chinese literature.

"A vertitable feast of concise, useful, reliable, and up-to-date information (all prepared by top scholars in the field), Nienhauser's now two-volume title stands alone as THE standard reference work for the study of traditional Chinese literature. Nothing like it has ever been published." —
