The Impact of new technologies on publishing: proceedings of the symposium organized by the Commission of the European Communities, Directorate-General for Scientific and Technical Information and Information Management, and held in Luxembourg, November 6

Rund 300 Dörfer und Kleinstädte im alemannischen Raum zwischen Zürich und Straßburg haben ab dem 15. Jh. als "Stuben" bezeichnete Gemeindehäuser errichtet. Sie waren Zentrum des politischen, rechtlichen und geselligen Lebens. In rund 40 Stuben gründeten die Honoratioren "Stubengesellschaften". Dass es solche Korporationen nicht wie sonst nur für Adel und Patrizier sowie für Zünfte, sondern auch auf dörflicher und kleinstädtischer Ebene gab, ist Ausdruck für die Stärke des Kommunalismus im Südwesten. Mit dem Siegeszug des neuzeitlichen Flächenstaates verloren die Gemeinden ihre Autonomie etwa bei der Bestimmung des Wirts. Aus den Stuben wurden Gasthäuser, die sich nur noch durch einzelne verbliebene Privilegien wie Holzbezug und "Hochzeitskronen" (Abgabe für Hochzeiter, die nicht in der Stube gefeierten) von der Konkurrenz abhoben.
