It was a deadly mistake. Joseph Malik, editor of a radical magazine, had snooped into rumors about an ancient secret society that was still alive and kicking. Now his offices have been bombed, he's missing, and the case has landed in the lap of a tough, cynical, streetwise New York detective. Saul Goodman knows he's stumbled onto something bigbut even he can't guess how far into the pinnacles of power this conspiracy of evil has penetrated. Filled with sex and violencein and out of time and spacethe three books of The Illuminatus! Trilogy are only partly works of the imagination. They tackle all the cover-ups of our timefrom who really shot the Kennedys to why there's a pyramid on a one-dollar billand suggest a mind-blowing truth. The Illuminatus! Trilogy is a series of three novels by American writers Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson, first published in 1975.[1] The trilogy is a satirical, postmodern, science fiction-influenced adventure story; a drug-, sex-, and magic-laden trek through a number of conspiracy theories, both historical and imaginary, related to the authors' version of the Illuminati. The narrative often switches between third- and first-person perspectives in a nonlinear narrative. It is thematically dense, covering topics like counterculture, numerology, and Discordianism. The trilogy comprises three parts which contain five books and appendices: [The Eye in the Pyramid (][1]first two books), [The Golden Apple][2] (third and part of fourth book), [Leviathan][3] (part of fourth and all of fifth book, and the appendices). The parts were first published as three separate volumes starting in September 1975. In 1984 they were published as an omnibus edition and are now more commonly reprinted in the latter form. In 1986 the trilogy won the Prometheus Hall of Fame Award, designed to honor libertarian science fiction.[2] The authors went on to write several works, both fiction and nonfiction, that dealt further with the themes of the trilogy, but they did not write any direct sequels. Illuminatus! has been adapted for the stage, as an audio book and has influenced several modern writers, artists, musicians, and games-makers. The popularity of the word "fnord" and the 23 enigma can both be attributed to the trilogy. People are missing. The rest of the world is on the brink of nuclear annihilation. Are the events connected? Are the events what they seem? So begins the wild ride that is The Illuminatus Trilogy. Comprised of three stories: The Eye in the Pyramid, The Golden Apple, and Leviathan, the book unfolds with the history of time as its backdrop and the figures of history among its characters. The institutions we have come to depend on, from the government and the military to the churches and even the terrorist factions, are not what they seem, and neither are the events of history. There is a greater power at work, one which has continued to shape the landscape of time and society--one which is called the Illuminati. One Joe Malik has uncovered them and has begun to see the true nature of things. Or has he? "The ultimate conspiracy book ... hilariously raunchy ... the biggest sci-fi cult novel to come along since Dune."--The Village Voice. 805 pp Filled with sex and violence--in and out of time and space--the three books of The Illuminatus are only partly works of the imagination. They tackle all the coverups of our time--from who really shot the Kennedys to why there's a pyramid on a one-dollar bill.
