St Antony's College, Oxford, was founded by Antonin Besse, a French entrepreneur who wanted to establish an international college in France. When this proved impossible, he turned to the University of Oxford, and the college opened its doors to students there in October 1950. Under the inspired leadership of William Deakin, St Antony's became a centre for postgraduate teaching, specializing in area studies. From the beginning it was the most deliberately inter-national of all Oxford colleges, and by 1999 its students were drawn from over forty different countries. It was also the first Oxford college to admit substantial numbers of both men and women. Based on archival materials and personal recollections, this book recounts the college's struggles to develop and fund its ambitious academic programmes. It also describes the changing lifestyle of its students in a period of expanding postgraduate education Front Matter....Pages i-xii The Founding of St Antony’s College....Pages 1-14 The First Decade....Pages 15-30 The College Buildings....Pages 31-43 The Russian and East European Centre....Pages 44-58 European Studies and International Relations....Pages 59-79 Asian Studies....Pages 80-101 The Latin American Centre....Pages 102-114 The Middle East Centre....Pages 115-131 African Studies and Race Relations....Pages 132-142 Financing the College....Pages 143-164 The Governing Body, Fellows and Senior Members....Pages 165-198 The Bursary, Dining Hall, Buttery and Social Life....Pages 199-219 The Junior Members....Pages 220-243 The Library, College Publications and Public Relations....Pages 244-252 Back Matter....Pages 253-316 "The twentieth century posed great challenges for British foreign policy. How effectively did policymakers cope with change and decline? Were they as pragmatic as they claimed? Are there identifiable patterns of success and failure?". "Peter Mangold seeks to answer these questions in this new thematic account of British foreign policy between 1900 and 2000. Issues covered include imperial overstretch, the reluctance to engage militarily and politically with continental Europe, alliance management, the role of force, loss of Great Power status, and Britain's impact on the international system. The final chapter considers prospects for the twenty-first century."--BOOK JACKET. A growing interest in political Islam has assumed significant ideological and intellectual dimensions, especially in recent years. Rather than viewing the issue as Islam versus the rest, or tradition against modernity, this volume acknowledges the mutualities without overlooking the tensions. It centers on issues such as the Rushdie affair, conflictive pluralism in South Asia and Islam's links with the Kashmir dispute, the Iranian revolution, civil war in Afghanistan, and western public diplomacy. "This book gives an economic perspective to the analysis of deforestation. Following a survey of different deforestation definitions, theories and empirical evidence, a case-study of Ecuador provides a versatile historical picture of factors influencing forest loss throughout different periods, regions and ecosystems."--BOOK JACKET.
