The History of Medicine and Healthcare : Selected Papers

This volume brings together such topics as the history of psychiatry, biomedical ethics in history, military medicine, children, women and changing gender roles in modern medicine, public health history, and a special communication on the history of Canadian hospital workers. Of special note is a paper by internationally renowned historian, Dr Peter L. Twohig, Canadian Research Chair in the History of the Atlantic World at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is well-illustrated with images and diagrams pertaining to the history of medicine. Lesley Bolton is an instructor in the Department of Classics and Religion in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Calgary, Canada. Her research interests are ancient medicine, with a particular focus on women’s healthcare, female practitioners, and male authors. She is the author of Medical Terminology from Head to Toe. William J. Pratt is an instructor at Mount Royal University, Calgary, and historian at Parks Canada. He has taught military history, Canadian history, and Canadian studies at universities in Alberta, Canada. He is the co-author of Fighting with the Empire: Canada, Britain, and Global Conflict, 1867–1947. Frank W. Stahnisch is a Professor with joint appointment in the Department of Community Health Sciences and the Department of History at the University of Calgary, Canada. He also holds the AMF/Hannah Professorship in the History of Medicine and Health Care in the Cumming School of Medicine.
