Now more of a smouldering fire, its persistence is a serious obstacle on Turkey's route to EU accession. Uniquely utilizing Turkish sources, this book looks at how the conflict has developed since 1978. The History and Politics of the Cyprus Conflict is a case study of the fortunes of a divided society released from colonial rule, but in this case the solution to the conflict was found, not by the colonial power, but by the 'mother' countries, Greece and Turkey. Consequently when that solution broke down in 1963 they could not avoid involvement in the dispute that was a danger to concord in the Eastern Mediterranean, and thus to NATO. Attempts made by the Cypriots to resolve the dispute through the UN and the EU are carefully examined, with international pressures taken fully into account. A solution is vital for Turkey's progress to EU accession.
