Policing today involves many different state and non-state actors. This book traces the process of 'unbounding' policing, exploring the way that boundaries between public policing, regulators, inspectorates, intelligence services and private security are blurring, and the impact this will have on governance. This book explores policing, regulation, private security and intelligence to understand current transformations in policing. Policing today can no longer be understood only in terms of an organization (the police), but more and more in terms of multi-agency processes. This could be functional for national security interests, safety and security but detrimental to accountability and the democratic process. Bob Hoogenboom discusses notions of 'blurring of boundaries', 'unbounding' and 'hybridity' and pays homage to, and critiques, leading thinkers in the field. Hoogenboom argues that police studies and criminology are too fragmented and focused on the criminal justice system and not oriented enough towards 'undertows' in policing and security. Drawing from a wealth of academic sources but also literature and popular culture this book unpicks what these new forms of security mean for governance Front Matter....Pages i-viii Introduction....Pages 1-10 Within Public Policing: Gradual Centralisation....Pages 11-16 Within Public Policing: Fictional and Factual Policing....Pages 17-38 Blurring Boundaries and the Unbearable Lightness of Criminological Discourse....Pages 39-56 On Old Folks and Things That Pass Away: Criminology in 2018....Pages 57-72 The Governance of Policing and Security....Pages 73-81 ‘Grey Intelligence’: The Private and Informal Future....Pages 82-93 The Sopranos: Narrative Knowledge to Disrupt Academic Language....Pages 94-113 Ironies, Paradoxes and the Seven Plagues of Policing and Security....Pages 114-129 Technopoly....Pages 130-148 Blinded by the Light: The Interweaving of (Organised) Crime, White Collar Crime, State Crime and Terrorism....Pages 149-168 Unsafe and Unsound Practices....Pages 169-188 Myths in Policing and Security....Pages 189-199 Epilogue: Conversations with Clifford Shearing (II)....Pages 200-215 Back Matter....Pages 216-236 "This book explores policing, regulation, private security and intelligence to understand current transformations in policing.
