Learn how the future of medicine is being unlocked—one digital innovation at a time The Future of Health is an insightful and comprehensive overview of the past, present, and future of digital health. Accomplished health innovation leader Roberto Ascione delivers a practical exploration of how the latest digital technologies are transforming the practice of medicine and redefining health itself by making it more accessible, sustainable, and human. The book includes practical, real-world examples from the United States, Asia, and Europe of technology applications, companies, and start-up that have changed—or will change—our relationship with our health and the healthcare system. Readers will also find: How our health is becoming increasingly consumer and connected while technology is empowering patients in completely new ways and deeply transforming the doctor-patient relationship Discussions of how the training of medical professionals, particularly doctors, has changed—or needs to change—to meet the new digital reality Examinations of how new technologies will allow doctors to dodge many of the administrative and regulatory burdens they currently face each day Treatments of the ability of new technologies to unlock new, holistic ways of practicing medicine, with a focus on latest developments such as Digital Therapeutics and Virtual Reality Reflections on how digital health is fostering a shift “from cure to care” and will unleash a human-sized future for a more accessible, ubiquitous, and sustainable healthcare The Future of Health is required reading for medical practitioners and the managers of pharmaceutical companies. It will also earn a place in the libraries of medical device companies and healthcare entrepreneurs seeking an incisive treatment of the impact of digital technology on all aspects of healthcare. Also, the general public, interested in understanding how to take better control of their own health through digital technologies, will find this book insightful and easy to comprehend. "Digital has already drastically changed our lives in areas from music, food, travel television and even social relationships. Health is also now experiencing a strong influence from the digital realm, which will change our way of thinking about healthcare and how we approach it. The recent past has already brought on changes to health that can be considered disruptive, and it will be even more so in the near future! Yet, thanks to technology, disruption will also have a very positive face, as health services will also become more humane, reintroducing a level of empathy that almost disappeared from the field of medicine in the last century. In the area of devices we have gone from heavy and very expensive laptops with computing capabilities that would be considered ridiculous by today's standards, to extremely powerful handheld computers, smartphones, tablets, wearable devices... and this process is continuing with the ever increasing levels of miniaturization and affordability. We are now reaching a point where medical devices are becoming so small that, in some cases, they are designed to be swallowed! Pervasive health data collection, and the leveraging of big crowd-sourced data sets to inform perform personalized health screenings will have a great impact by allowing the identification of patterns, cyclical repetitions and large-scale correlations that will allow to predictively alert people of potential health conditions on the horizon with a great probability of accuracy. Digital transformation can also have an impact on the medical profession and the role of physicians in a multitude of ways. Some would go as far as saying that doctors will eventually almost "disappear", because many of the activities currently being performed by them will soon be carried out by software or processes integrated in the healthcare continuum; this being amongst one of the top topics of discussion for those in the healthcare industry attempting to predict a vision of what its future holds. In the author's vision, digital transformation will instead allow the physician to go back to a much more holistic approach in the practice of medicine, and have the ability to interact with patients on a more human and empathic level, thanks predominantly to having more available to spend with them, having been freed from the bureaucratic and administrative burdens that todays' doctors are obliged to devote most of their attention to. In today's training of new doctors, it would be wise to introduce a new curriculum grounded in digital health technological topics and courageously eliminate or reduce the training norms on subjects that are already outdated by the time the new doctor is entering practice. This digital transformation will also affect the patient support staff: the nursing profession will be equally impacted by this evolution, as they will be playing a significantly larger role than the one it performs at present. Digital health will be the catalyst making systemic optimization and change possible and sustainable, creating enormous efficiencies on all the different processes. The application of innovative solutions will disrupt the endemic inefficiencies of today's healthcare industry, improve overall standards of care, increase access to it by nearly universal levels and, most importantly bring the human aspect of health back into a central role. Throughout the chapters there are practical examples of applications, companies, or start-ups that have changed, are changing and will change our relationship with health. These examples are from both the United States and Europe"-- Provided by publisher Cover 1 Title Page 3 Copyright Page 4 Contents 7 Preface 13 Part I Digital Reflections 17 Chapter 1 Devices, Sensors, and Signals 19 From Wearables to Ingestibles—Toward the Invisibility of Digital Health 20 Roberto’s View 21 Apple Watch 22 Empatica 24 Proteus Digital Health 24 Qardio 25 Thync 26 Note 30 Chapter 2 Data Science and Artificial Intelligence 31 Using Big Data to Do Mass Screening and Prevention 32 Roberto’s View 34 Conversa Health 35 One Drop 36 Sensely.com 37 SkinVision 39 Notes 43 Chapter 3 Evolution of the Computer-Human Interfaces in Health Care 45 Roberto’s View 48 Alexa and Echo 49 Babylon and Healthily 50 HoloLens 52 MindMaze 53 Pepper Robot 53 Psious 54 PatchAi 55 Notes 55 Chapter 4 Telemedicine and Remote Monitoring 57 How Telemedicine Will Change Our Lives 58 Covid-19: The Tipping Point of Telehealth 60 Roberto’s View 60 Omada Health 61 Sano 62 Teladoc Health 62 TytoCare 63 VitalConnect 64 Notes 67 Chapter 5 Digital Health Enabling Platforms 69 Platforms for Connecting Doctors and Patients, Remote Monitoring Systems, and Management of Their Therapies 70 Roberto’s Vision 72 Altibbi 73 Apple Health 74 Cohealo 75 DocDoc 76 Doctolib 76 hi.health 77 Livongo 77 Paginemediche 78 Notes 85 Chapter 6 Digital Therapeutics: A New Phase of Medicine 87 Roberto’s Vision 90 Akili 92 Amicomed 93 Click Therapeutics 94 Ginger.io 95 Kaia Health 95 Voluntis 96 Notes 99 Chapter 7 Personal Genomics 101 From Mendel to Portable DNA Mapping Machines 102 Roberto’s Vision 104 23andMe 106 Deep Genomics 107 Flatiron Health 108 Human Longevity 109 Sophia Genetics 110 Cellarity 110 Notes 113 Chapter 8 Open Innovation and Partnerships 115 How Companies Are Moving: The Speed and Intuition of Smaller Companies 116 Roberto’s Vision 117 AlmirallShare and Digital Garden 119 Bayer G4A 120 Frontiers Health 120 Healthware Labs and Healthware Life Hub 121 HealthXL 122 Johnson & Johnson Innovation Labs (JLABS) 123 Novartis Biome 123 Open Accelerator 123 Patients’ Digital Health Awards 124 Pfizer Healthcare Hubs 124 Roche HealthBuilders 125 StartUp Health 125 Vertical 126 Notes 135 Chapter 9 Lifestyle as Medicine 137 From Self-Empowerment to Lifestyle as Medicine 138 Roberto’s Vision 139 Headspace 141 HealthTunes 142 Noom 143 Sleepio 143 Pioppi Protocol 144 YourCoach.health 144 Part Two Human Reflections 147 Chapter 10 The New Physicians and Patients: Empowered Doctors and Health Consumers 151 An Ever-Increasing Pressure 152 Will Doctors Disappear? 154 Necessary Scientific Validation 155 Patients as Health-Care Consumers 156 Chapter 11 Old versus New 157 A Necessary Adaptation 158 New Training 159 A Collective Effort Is Needed 160 Note 161 Chapter 12 Trust versus Fear: The Path Ahead 163 The Horizon Opening Before Us 164 Double face medal 165 Chapter 13 Exponential versus Incremental: The Unstoppable Digital Transformation of Health 167 A Financial Revolution Too 168 Digital Health-Care Investments around the World 170 A Glance toward the Future 175 Notes 175 Conclusions: A Radical Shift 177 Connecting the dots 177 Five Big Changes for a Paradigm Shift 178 Acute versus Preventive 178 Observational versus Data Driven 179 One-by-Oneversus Collectively 179 Retrospective versus Predictive 179 Fragmented versus Integrated 180 The Final Goal: Humanize Care through Technology 180 What’s Next? 184 A Greater Responsibility 189 Note 190 Appendix: Speeches by Roberto Ascione 191 About the Author 193 About Healthware 195 Acknowledgments 197 Index 199 EULA 211 **Learn how the future of medicine is being unlocked—one digital innovation at a time** __The Future of Health__ is an insightful and comprehensive overview of the past, present, and future of digital health.
