The Faber Book of 20th Century Women's Poetry

This anthology of women's poetry is destined to establish a canon by which other, more partial anthologies will eventually be judged. It is at once historically representative, catholic in its taste, and rigorously selective - demonstrating the richness and variety of women's contributions to twentieth-century literature. In making her selection, Fleur Adcock has pursued no particular dogmatic line, unless it be that of excellence. The acknowledged presiding geniuses - Marianne Moore, Elizabeth Bishop, Sylvia Plath, Stevie Smith - are more generously represented than is usual, while many British, American, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian poets are epitomized by their best work.
