Authored by medical writer Turkington (The Encyclopedia of Alzheimer's Disease) and hematologist-oncologist Lipera, this reference is one of four new cancer encyclopedias from Facts On File (see also The Encyclopedia of Men's Reproductive Cancer, The Encyclopedia of Women's Reproductive Cancer, and The Encyclopedia of Breast Cancer). The volume's more than 400 well-written, easy-to-understand, A-to-Z entries range in length from simple See reference to two or more pages. Longer entries provide detailed information on major cancers, risk factors, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, screening, staging, treatment and side effects, epidemiology (race, sex, age, family history), and support groups. Appendixes include a directory of cancer organizations and clinical cancer centers, and a glossary of medical terminology. Unfortunately, the extensive bibliography, arranged alphabetically by author, is not linked in any way to the individual entries. A subject arrangement would have helped guide readers to additional information. Bottom Line Despite the flaws, this is a useful introductory resource to a disease that by some estimates was diagnosed in the United States more than 1.4 million times in 2004. Not as extensive as The Gale Encyclopedia of Cancer: A Guide to Cancer and Its Treatments but less expensive. Recommended.-Jodith Janes, Cleveland Clinic Fdn.
