URBS ist die erste internationale Reihe, die den aktuellen bauhistorischen und urbanistischen Fragen der Antiken Baugeschichte und Klassischen Archäologie ein spezielles Forum eröffnet. Sie zielt darauf, architektonische und urbanistische Analysen und architektur- und raumsoziologische Fragestellungen in einen wechselseitig befruchtenden Dialog zu bringen. Im Zentrum stehen architektonische und urbanistische Forschungen zu den Kulturen der Klassischen Antike sowie ihrer kulturellen Vorstufen; ebenso Thema sind die Rezeption und Transformation entsprechender antiker Phänomene in den Nachbarkulturen sowie den nachfolgenden Kulturen der Spätantike, des Islams, des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit. Erforscht werden Räume und Bauten dabei sowohl in ihrer funktionalen Qualität als auch in ihrer repräsentativen Dimension bei der Stiftung von politischer Macht, sozialer Differenz und kultureller Identität.
