The conscience : a structural theory

We. shall analyze the original prisoner’s dilemma story, and show that there is no paradox involved, and that the notion of rationality, as conceived by both common sense and our theory of the faculty of interest, is not affected at all by the dilemma, in contrast to the utility-theoretical concept of ratio- nality. We shall present the dilemma, in all of its manifestations, as a clear case of a conflict in the evaluations of conscience and interest.
