The function of whether the ingratiation was intended to benefit the individual ingratiator or the entire group was also investigated. Subjects were students enrolled in Psychology classes at Lamar University. Subjects completed a cohesion building task (egg drop exercise) and then read a scenario of an interaction between a group member and a supervisor. The subjects then answered a questionnaire measuring group cohesion. Subjects also answered another questionnaire to analyze nine secondary dependent variables. A 2 (ingratiation: present or not present) x 2 (desired benefit: individual or group) factorial design was employed. No significant effects involving cohesiveness were found. However, both ingratiation and desired benefit significantly affected the perceived manipulativeness of the ingratiator. This research was the first to investigate the effects of ingratiation on group cohesiveness
Autism was only identified and recognised relatively recently, but even so one might have expected the church to have moved further in its thinking about how autistic thinking can contribute to the life of the church. At a time when churches exhibit a heightened awareness of 'inclusion' and recognition of difference in all manner of ways, it is startling how little attention is given to those who have autism.Drawn from extensive research amongst autistic worshippers, Autistic Thinking in the Life of the Church develops and explores a model in which churches can strengthen and retain the cognitive engagement of those worshippers in their congregations who are on the autistic spectrum.
