This illustrated history is the latest release by the retired school teacher and lecturer David Bilton, and it principally examines Der Große Krieg (The Great War) on the Eastern Front from the viewpoint of the Mittelmächte (The Central Powers - The German and Ottoman Empires, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria) and their enemies Russia and Romania. At its heart is its Collection of unique and wide ranging archival images which together portray an invaluable record of how all combatants tried to survive in the increasingly grim conditions that they faced, as much as in the war itself. The end result is a detailed and fascinating series of images highlighting these servicemen and women fighting against one another on the Eastern Front from 1914. This book covers the fighting and very briefly, where relevant, the politics and economics of the war in Russia and in the Habsburg and Hohenzollern Empires, through the use of images held by private collectors and others used in texts first published in that time. This was a war of an unimaginably vast scale that was often undertaken at temperatures below zero, a war where men and women often froze to death or suffered from cases of pneumonia and debilitating frostbite almost as much as they were wounded or killed in battle. Most of all It was a war that was vastly different in many ways to that which was being experienced on The Western Front. As this history's subject is the Central Powers in Russia, the often overlooked Russian Civil War post 1917 is outside its remit, However, this did affect the Germans and Austrians in particular who after the 1917 Armistice actively encouraged and supplied White Russian Forces and on occasion took part in engagements against Revolutionary forces - especially in Finland and The Ukraine. This history thus deals with the conflict between the main protagonists on the main fronts during that time, from Finland down to Romania. Arranged in five sections, one for each year of the War, this superbly illustrated book covers the fluid fighting that took place on the Russian Front from August 1914. The author describes how each year saw dramatic developments, notably actions in Poland, Tannenberg, the Carpathian passes in 1914, the 1915 operations in Galicia and the Baltic and the 1916 Brinsilov offensive. 1917 saw the collapse of the German army leading to the 1918 Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and continued fighting along the Baltic and in the Ukraine. The informative text is complemented by over 200 mainly previously unpublished photographs. The Central Powers on the Russian Front 1914 1918 with its emphasis on the German Army's actions against Russia but covering operations on many fronts makes it especially valuable to those who seek greater insight into the wider conduct of The Great War away from the Western Front.
