This reexamination of __Sendai kuji hongi (Kujiki)__ convincingly leads the reader to new conclusions on its place within the history and historiography of early Japan. While the __Sendai kuji hongi__ is generally considered as simply derivative, drawing on __Kojiki__, __Nihon shoki__, and __Kogo shūi__, John Bentley's careful textual analysis demonstrates that the work has actually drawn from drafts of __Kojiki__ and __Nihon shoki__, but not __Kogo shūi__, which has quoted from __Kujiki__. Thus the work can not be seen as a product of the early Heian era, but must date from the early Nara era.
