Fortunately, his granddaughter’s wonderful book ensures that we’ll always remember this one-of-a-kind cartooning legend.” ― The Washington Times "Not many of us make it into the dictionary as an adjective. But then again, Rube Goldberg is no ordinary noun. He was a cartoonist, humorist, sculptor, author, engineer, and inventor, and in his seventy-two-year career, he wrote and illustrated nearly fifty thousand cartoons, which were syndicated in daily newspapers throughout the world. Goldberg (1883-1970) was the most famous cartoonist of his time, best known for his comical inventions. He once described these zany contraptions as a "symbol of man's capacity for exerting maximum effort to achieve minimal results," believing most people went about things the hard way rather than using a more simple and direct path to accomplish their goals. His unique take on the human condition made him part of the vernacular, and his continuing popularity and impact on pop culture can be seen in the viral nature of "Rube Goldberg machines" on the web and in advertising. In The Art of Rube Goldberg, author Jennifer George celebrates all aspects of her grandfather's life. From his very first published drawings in his high school newspaper, his iconic inventions, comic strips, and advertising work, to his Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoons and later sculpture, every chapter of Rube's legendary career is revealed. Also included are essays by noted comics historians, rare photographs, letters, memorabilia, and patents, many reproduced here for the first time." --Publisher's description, lower cover Not many of us make it into the dictionary as an adjective. This biography tells the story of how a great intellect, Noam Chomsky's, was shaped. It describes the political and intellectual contexts that helped form the unyielding principles by which Chomsky lives, and the arenas of scholarship, political action, and ideology to which he still contributes. Along the way, the book provides an engaging political history of the last several decades, and many insights into how history too often gets rewritten. Chomsky's views on the uses and misuses of the university are highlighted, as are his doubts about the legitimacy of post-modernist inquiry, and his overall assessment of useful political engagement.
In a sense, this book strives to be the autobiography that Chomsky will probably never write by letting Chomsky speak for himself on the matters of greatest concern to him, through well-placed excerpts from his copious body of published writings and unpublished corespondence.
Examines the work of the cartoonist, humorist, sculptor, author, engineer, and inventor
