The agrarian economy of the Bombay Deccan, 1818-1941

Revision of the author's thesis (Ph. D.--Cambridge University, 1981). Studies of Indian economic development have in large part concentrated on the role of British imperial intervention in the region. This book, while attaching due importance to the effects of British rule, focuses on other economic factors, such as agricultural techniques and the land-man ratio, to analyze the agrarian history of the Bombay Deccan. This study takes a synoptic view of the agrarian history of an Indian region, examining all the conditions that influenced its development and observing their long-term effects.
