In order to provide a sound basis for earthquake prediction research phenomena of earthquake generating processes should be studied by laboratory experiments, field observations, and model computation. Rock fracturing experiments in the laboratory are carried out to simulate and explain observed phenomena. A complexity of phenomena preceding earthquakes, such as the accumulation of strain, displacements along faults, changes of physical rock properties and microearthquake activity, is observed by various field techniques. The new space geodetic techniques overcome certain limitations of conventional ground surveys. Computation of dynamical models, using the observed precursory phenomena as constraints, is the necessary basis for a better understanding of earthquake generating processes and for earthquake prediction.
